Can someone PLEASE help me?! I'm a noob at this but basically when I try to play my edited footage, it just plays my original footage from the Event Library on the Canvas, instead of my edited footage from the Timeline. What you need to understand is that we are editors. We don't refuse to edit something because we are handed the wrong program. Unless it's WMM or iMovie we work with what we are given, because you know what, the programs have the same function and the project will end up the same in the end. I felt the same way, Final Cut X is like a different program than the previous versions (which, kinda makes sense in a way considering there was no 8 or 9... just x). I love the ease that FCPX provided but it was like an I Movie upgrade rather than the pro stuff that I'm used to getting from previous FCP installments. But, I'm trying to learn it anyway just for the simple fact that as an editor it's good? to be versatile across software. I agree with Ryan, it's not great nor is it the worst.

I'm not saying they should, either. As a video editor, investing energy into FCP? X was a gamble. By adopting the software I stand to benefit long term as the program becomes more fully featured. In the short term, I took a hit by losing everything that made 7 great. It's an individual choice, and yes Apple lost hoards of pros with FCP X... but they gained the prosumer, a valuable market segment $ which Apple plans to monetize at the expense of their legacy user base.

Final Cut X has a lot of cool things going for it, the interface is amazing. Final Cut X does have one serious flaw though, it's not a nonlinear digital video editor. It's a toy for 'amateur hour' YOU CAN'T COPY AND PASTE KEYFRAMES, LET ME REPEAT? THAT. YOU. CAN'T. COPY. AND. PASTE. KEY FRAMES. which is like not being able to say "I" in regular daily conversation. Motion tracking would be? more suited to a composting program like Apple Motion, Adobe after Effects, or Hit Film. FCP-X, much like Avid or Premiere Pro, is a NLE (non-linear editor), and is really best at putting a timeline together, to create a finalized movie (or clip) product. Motion tracking is something you'd do before you put your footage in a NLE.

I use AVID at school (on a HP Z400 workstation, mind you, decked out with 12GB RAM, a 3.2GHz Intel Xeon, and a Quadro 2000) and it runs beautifully. That said, I also use Pr.Pro CS5, and I like it more. Why? Details, it allows me to edit in extreme detail. AVID is kind of stream lined, and thus limited. You CAN edit in detail, but it requires an inside and out knowledge of the program. Pr.Pro is a helluva quicker program on the learning curve. Still, both are nice.?
