Can you explain further on the caulk used in the mash. Why? How did you determine how much to use? Can you talk a little bit about the water used in your brew?? sir: leave your brew in your carboy longer. about 1 to 2 months, transferring every few weeks so the beer doesn't sit on? the cruft. once perfectly clear, filter it into your metal kegs, place kegs into your freezer until proper temp is reached. hook up your Co2 lines to the kegs - start bottling. much superior product and NO sediment.

awesome product- thanks for the vid- You are the man when it comes to home brewing, learned more? from a few of your vids compared to all of the reading I've done. anyone complaining about the shipping price- they are reusable-over time the cost precipitates. That is as long as you continue brewing.. :P i'd say perfect for keggers who like to bottle just a few bottles per batch.

That wouldn't help with the? sediment in the bottles. The sediment is a bi-product of carbonating, so beer fermented in a carboy that filtered out sediment would have just as much sediment at the bottom of the bottle after conditioning. More importantly, with something like this on a carboy, you wouldn't be able to take samples to check taste, gravity, etc.

1.) I'm interested in maybe starting something like this. I LOVE? micro beer, my local liquor store carries a dumb amount of different varieties. I love trying new beers. So my questions for you is: Hows the finished product? Does it really stand up to micro beer i can buy? Is it cost effective? The beers i buy at the liquor store vary from $1.89 to over $4.00 a bottle depending on what you buying. How much roughly does it cost per bottle when you do it yourself?

At the beginning of the video, he said he started with 3 gallons of water. This is most likely because most pots cannot accommodate more than 5 gallons of water. During the 1 hour boil, somewhere around a gallon will evaporate. What's left is called the concentrated wort,? which needs to be diluted before fermenting so the fermentables and hops to balance out amongst the total 5 gallons. The wort/water ratio is not as important as the right amount of ingredients during the boil.

I don't think your ice will last long in your bucket. As 212 degree heat is exchanged, your ice is going to melt and get warn. But if you keep adding ice or snow, it could work in theory. A counterflow chiller, however, is something you could use if you have the right equipment. There is also mini-chillers out there that you put in buckets of ice to get the water as cold as you can before it goes into either the? immersion or counterflow chiller. This chills your beer much quicker.

Has anyone tried to cool down the wort using the immersion wort chiller in an "inverse" way: This is having the chiller in a bucket of ice and making the wort go throughout the coil.? Makes more sense to me and saves lots of water. Would that work the same?

because beer has a LOT a calories in it and by god I'm beginning to feel? it. each beer has about 200-350 calories in them. each. so if you had a nice night of drinking some pretty epic beer and drank 6 in a night, bam. 1500 calories (conservative estimate). True, they have a LOT of nice benifity stuff (like booz, vitamin B, antioxidants, to name a few), but it all comes with the calories. now I'm trying to cut back and have 6 cases of homebrew beer lying around at home :P

fun fact: you can also use malta to make your starter. from what I hear, its og is? at abut 1.06. combine and water it down until its close to 1.04 and I've heard that it works perfectly. side note: is it ok to use a Mississippi mud jug to hold my starter? and would a spritz from my steam blaster sanatize my tin foil properly? that's kinda my stigmatization method of choice ^^

Hi Chris, how about a video on stepping up a yeast starter? I make starters just like you do, but after two? days I decant the wort and add another 2 cups of fresh wort to the yeast cake and put back on my spin plate for another two days. I don't know if this is the best way or if I need more wort for the step up or a bigger flask or what. Thanks.

At 1.040 its optional but if you have the time/supplies I would say go for it but anything over 1.060 I always make a starter for. I go by the 1.060? standard myself. Cheers!

Whoa,? wait a minute.. Anything over 1.040 needs a starter? I have made several beers around the 1.070 range without a starter and haven't had any issue with final gravity. White Labs recommends a starter for anything over 1.060. What is the reasoning for making a starter if the OG is 1.040? Just confused.

I dont really use a pitching? calculator. If its a big beer meaning something around 1.080 or high I will usuall pitch 2 liters worth and have never had an issue. I usually make the starter the day before so it has 12+ hours to ferment which is more then enough time. I try to pitch younger yeast just so they are more viable.

Well, I suspect that it's about 12 or 14 psi inside the keg - I've never taken a pressure measurement. Anyway, I don't leave the CO2 on after carbonation. ? I bleed in just enough periodically while serving to keep the beer flowing. As long as the dispensing hose is the right length and diameter to keep the proper pressure drop along the length of the hose it should be the correct internal pressure. Strictly speaking you could leave the CO2 on all the time at 12 or 14 psi., but I fear leaks.

I was thinking the same thing about the temp messing with the fittings. I dropped it from 75 to 50 in about 2 days and then down to 40 for crashing. It didnt start leaking until it was in the low? temps so I was thinking the same thing. I just took all the fitting apart and put more teflon tape on. Ill have to be more gentle with the drops I guess

It is wonderful to see someone preaching temp control. Making good wort is easy controlling yeast is the magical part. It is possible that the huge? swing in temp from hot to cool made the connections leak a bit.

nice setup man. standing fridge? is definitely the way to go there for the conical. I am currently getting my ferment chamber ready to go. I got a Ranco temp controller off amazon recently, and I just need to get a chest freezer and I will be good to go. I am going to brew an IPA this week, but since I am using WLP001 the temp factor wont be much to worry about(apt usually sits near 65 lol). When I brew a Tripel or Dubbel then I will have to be careful about the temp. Cheers!

No I was cold crashing a tripel. Its been in there for 3 weeks now. I started it at 64F and ramped it up to 75 over 10 days. Held it there for 4 days and slowly have been bringing it down to the current temp.? Cheers

Yeah a 20cuft freezer should fit 2 carboys or 2 ale pails side by side. I havent had any mold issues yet but I have been keeping an eye on it. So far? so good. I fermented the tripel in the video in there are 75F for 2 days and had no issues

Not 100% sure about the fancy Coopers range, but with all your? standard white Coopers tins it's just an ale yeast. I'd recommend leaving it at 18c for a few days before worrying. The end result will be a less fruity, more earthy beer. When I used a proper lager yeast, it took 3 days at 12c before any head came up.

I wash mine with just water usually, but every so often I use just the smallest amount of dish soap to get rid of any oils which are also bad for head. Use something simple, not with all those hand softening agents and such. Cheap dish soap. I avoid soap usually but every so often I have to use it. The head problem most likely is the beers fault more than the? glass or soap, but we all have the same problem.

Well, the second answer might help with the first. I used the Coopers yeast that came? with the kit, and it suggested 21C, but went on to say that as low as 13C would be ok. Knowing that most people don't have proper lagering conditions, Coopers formulates the yeasts so that they can still perform well at higher temps. I think that folks should do what the company that makes the yeast suggests.

I have two quick questions: Why do you ferment your lagers at high temperatures? And what kind of yeast did you use? I did it once when? I was new in the game, and it ended up tasting like a watered-out lager with vodka. (Best description i have for the taste :-p) Now I ferment all my lagers at 9-10 degrees celcius, and let them ferment over 4 weeks. Then I let the beer have a diacetyl rest at 3 days. :-)

Wow that would be so much better then Hops, and add some white oak chips soaked for awhile in Bourbon use better stuff like Very Old Barton... this will impart flavor, Hops are good only for me to add floral and flavor, to me if you leave too long, or you have a bitter buzz destroying beer and it not only takes your buzz away it tastes Bitter not smooth and you don't enjoy the real flavor of your Abbey. If you want a weed-like flavor in your beer then use summit hops. The only time I used them they had a very distinct weed flavor and aroma to them. I even had friends ask if? I used weed in the beer! Good Luck. Also, why brew a beer with weed like flavors if you've never smoked or tasted raw hops? You may not even like the flavor or aroma they give to a beer. Just saying.

hmm well i know adding thc would be hard to get extracted in the beer...but what about for flavor because there are very floral and citric strains that i think would add flavor but ive also never smoked/tasted raw hops so i really wouldn't know if any strain of weed would be as bitter? or floral as hops just a thought

Marijuana won't dissolve the THC in hot water it has to be oil based or alcohol to dissolve it. There is a drink i never tryed it but its Green Dragon and its THC 190 proof Alcohol. The only idea of? how you can make an THC brew would be to add this Green Dragon to your brew and if you should do that i would pack a ton of Rip with high THC into a small amount of Alcohol so that your brews yeast won't be killed.

Foam is one thing, but you chop at it with a paddle for a minute, and a whisk for half a? minute and it still looks like watery biscuit dough! Having just returned from west Germany, I would say the stein is designed to? make the beers better as the ale in Germany, contrary to popular belief, is pretty crap. Even the brewery's make beers that could be easily replicated by the most novice of brewers. Unfortunate really as we had high hopes for the trip, but just saying.

Thanks for the reply Craig, I have a mini fridge with a temp control, the maximum being 5C (41F). I brewed the lager at around 15C (59F). John Palmer recommends that the lagering phase should roughly be 10f less than the brewing temp so I don't think I'll be too far out here, obviously the colder your fridge the longer the lagering phase will take. I? saw the video you posted reviewing peihomebrewer's Euro Lager a while back now, how did your brew compare to his? Cheers

I think a fridge is too cold, unless you have temp control. Don't tell anyone but? I didn't bother with any of this, and mine was still very good. My basement is 64F.

Hi Craig, I too am brewing the Coopers European Lager kit right now and I'm just thinking about how I'm going to do the 'lagering' process next week. I've been told you can either put the beer into bottles and chill them in the fridge for a couple of months or chill a carboy down then transfer it to whatever storage vessel you wish after the lagering is complete.? What would you suggest? Cheers

Shouldn't be a problem as long as you can get the carboy for a good price. I personally don't like glass carboys because they get real heavy and if you drop them they make a HUGE mess and can be dangerous (espicially? if you have pets or children around). With that said if you decide to get the glass carboy use some PBW and? a carboy cleaner with warm/hot water and let it sit for a day or two and it will come out sparkling clean.

@evan5159 I don't remember for sure if Craig did a mead vid, but his hard cider or inmate brew vids are very close to mead making. I made my first one a few months ago and it is nothing? short of amazing. I happen to have an orange tree in my front yard so I made an OJ mead. Very simple and very tasty. Long story short, it is very similar to wine or cider except you substitute honey as the main fermentable ingredient.

You need to research distilling. This is the process of refining your spirit to a higher alcohol level. In a nutshell, its heating your liquid just to the point that the alcohol evaporates and is captured in a condenser. As it slowly collects it then drips down into a container leaving the impurities? and water behind in the pot. This is also illegal in the US and I believe Canada by the way. Hey buddy I have been checking out your videos for a while now. Im putting stuff together to start brewing beer. I have a question, I notice that a lot of people recommend using a stainless steel pot for cooking the wort, but does it really have to be stainless? I dont find any large stainless pots locally, but I find a lot of large aluminum pots. Could I use aluminum? Would it give the beer a different taste? Should I just continue on with my search for? a stainless steel pot?

If you want one with everything I would get the coopers diy beer kit. It should be just over $100 over there. I bought one myself a few days ago as a replacement for my old equipment. You might want to get a stock pot? that you can use for boiling if you decide to experiment later on.

Does Starsan not claim to be an acid based sanitizer? I fail to see how some cloudiness could negate the effects when the strips are showing an acidic ph. Maybe it? will just have to be one of those hard learned lessons but so far the masses are saying that the cloudiness hasn't been a factor for effectiveness. Emptying your? keg i would be heart broken, Cant you build in your basement a unit you can sit your kegg in and slot your pump into a holder so its like a bar but still easy to take it out and move it around like you do now could be a slot or quick release bolts ect.. or you could make a keggerator and keezer combined would be intertesting dont think anyone has done that, while no fermenting is being done could be a keggerator anyways 17 from the uk sorry i dont catch you fridays working

why do we all want to do allgrain and brew? like the pros but when we buy shop bought brewed by them we call the shitty lol As for starsan never used it but i use my vwp sanitiser twice to clean my equipment on brew day and to clear my lines and sanitise my kegg ready to be filled which can be up to one week after brew day i dont get any problems only ever had one bad taste in my beer which because i never washed my kegg out anough and vwp has a horrible taste to it unlike starsan no rinse :)

Hey craig to help your (overheated fermentation) i use a automatic light timer to control? the tempature of the fermentation. just plug it in and set the timer to go on and off randomly to keep the tempature where i want it. that way it doesnt get too hot or too cold.

17!!!! Nicely done . I just took the plunge two weeks ago and made my first ALL Grain brew in a 1 bedroom apt lol. One lesson learned never brew smashed LOL. I am waiting to move it to secondary . What makes it really special is I used my whole first year hop harvest in it. If it turns out I? will have to send you a bottle. I figure if people in New Zealand can I should be able to. I love hearing the glugging and bubbling of all the airlocks in your brew area . Anyways cheers mate!!!

I guess because it comes from the Old English word wyrt. Even most? instructions from brew shops will go out of their way to give the correct pronunciation of "wert", but I think old habits die hard. Just a pet peeve anyway, it all tastes the same!
