A scientist working for NASA, make average salary for? their fields, not millions. Two of the greatest invention of our time, the internet and Atomic power were developed by the government. Space exploration is not profitable in that way. It too expensive, too much risk. You can't stick it in a box and sell it at your local Wal-Mart. They'll just be able to bring more profit down to earth as they expand the knowledge of mankind. With private companies, come innovation. I have nothing against people who make money, or even people who make alot of money. But their are things that? matter more than just money, advancement of knowledge for example. Scientists, who worked for NASA, were not doing it for the money, in reality they were not making that much. Space is a long term investment, not sometimes you can make a quick buck on. The Russians had to take some heavier pieces. The orbit where the ISS was built benefited the Russian launch site and not KSC. The shuttle had to fly an 57 degree inclination to the ISS that reduced its capacity to carry items to that orbit. It had to be an orbit where both countries could reach. What the shuttle carried? was not that much lighter. The shuttle has carried 59,000lb payloads into certain orbits.

Not to nit pick, but there's gravity in space. Astronauts don't feel? it because they are always falling together with their ship. Gravity is what keeps things in orbit, even an orbit to the Moon.

It only needs enough to get away from Earth's gravity and push? it towards the moon. Issac Newton does the rest. Once they are up there they only operate the engines for at most a few minutes at a time. Another way to look at it is that they never left Earth orbit. It was just a REALLY egg shaped orbit that went all the way around the Moon.

I was onboard this flight. When everybody ran to the right side of the plane to see the shuttle, all the weight of everybody shifted the plane to tip over at a 30 degree angle. The pilot then told half of the passengers to get on the left side of plane quickly. By doing this the plane then was properly balanced and then then everybody got free Root Beer drinks and the space? shuttle, North Star flew off into space and was Lost in Space and never heard from again. True story!

Shuttle (like the Vietnam War) taught us many things about what NOT to do. We learned Wernher von Braun was correct about not using Solid fuel on a rocket that carries people. We proved re-usability, but we also learned about its huge impracticality by the 3rd launch. It never came remotely came close to its promised $50million p/launch cost. It was 1.5 billion. Its a shame on all Americans for letting the program continue so long because so many people and resources were lost. ?
