You are correct, the lens? has been modified for EOS with IS. I use this lens on my Red, Canon EOS-C300 and 1D X. On Olympus then everything will be manual adjustments. Right, the 12/2 becomes 24/2 on 4/3 camera. You lose 50% of good optics. All 4/3 lens are only corrected 50% in the middle. 4/3 will not produce wider lenses because they and the world are aiming at the beginner's markets just to stay alive. They can't make money by selling to the few (pros). Just like Leica & Zeiss

You really have the Noctilux?! A beautiful lens! I understand what you mean by "50% of loss". Yet I believe? that multiplying focal length does not result in loss in optics, since it is the "analog" world. If anything, it would be cropped, finally depending on sensor aspect&resolution, not on the lens. If by "true" 24mm you mean a 35mm equivalent, the closest there is for the time being is the M.Zuiko 12/f2, which although costly, the cost is utterly justified. For an f1.4 we should just wait. :)

We are both correct. I have the ATG Leica 50/0.95 IS and use this on the OM-1/2/3/4 and OM-D with adapter. But the lost 50% of good optics, now the effect is 100mm. You would need 12mm/f1.4 to equal 24mm/1.4 for 4/3 cameras. 25mm/1.4 is a common lens of really 50mm/1.4 for 4/3 cameras. 17.5/0.95 is 35mm in 4/3 world. Not wide enough. They just don't make a true 24mm/1.4 for 4/3. It's easier to make tele? lenses than wide angle lenses.

Sorry but you've got it wrong: 1.IF you want equivalence to 35mm you have to do x2 from m4/3! 50mm lens of a 35mm camera put on m4/3 is 100mm.? BUT focal length is dependent on format: in APS-C cameras, it's 80mm (1.6x 50mm). All makers give focal length OF THEIR LENSES ON THEIR SYSTEMS. 2.All makers apply similar prices! 3.As for "slow" lenses, wrong again: -M.Zuiko 45 f1.8 -M.Zuiko 75 f1.8 -M.Zuiko 20 f1.2 -Summilux 25 f1.4 -Nokton 25 f/0.95 (MF) m4/3 is a young system. Give it time.

You are correct about 12-35/2.8 (24-70/2.8) is not cheap. Overall on the Micro 4/3 cameras are that their lenses are very slow. All their lenses are only 50% good optics? but you pay a premium prices and think that you have 100% of good glasses. That's why all lens (in mm) number must be multiplied by 2 to get a true focal length in mm. Olympus supports won't know this and so are many Olympus users.

?his is a zoom at 12-50mm, f/3.5-6.3. It's not a fixed 100mm, it's not @ f/6.3. At max it's a 50 @ f6.3. Entry kit lenses from every manufacturer are almost always underspecced. Fixed focal length zoom lenses are very expensive, regardless of manufacturer. I cannot see your point here. If you need a high specced zoom lens for m4/3 then go with the Panasonic Lumix G X Vario 12-35mm F2.8 ASPH which will come out soon. It will set you back 1300$, which is half of? what you would pay for Canon/Nikon.

It's only F3.5 @ 24mm (12MM) Then F Stop jumps up to F6.3 as you zoom out of 24mm. Canon scams the starter photographers by saying very sharp lenses with those cheap EFS, then Nikon copied Canon and called their- DX lenses. 60/2.8 is always sharper than 50/1.2. Scams- they usually called the 60 as a micro lens & nailed you with a high prices. At high & slow F Stop you always get good depth-of-field (sharpest & quick AF), but the major drawback is slow Shutter Speed, which? is a bad thing.

It's sharp is because they are very slow lenses. Lens with high F Stop always has great depth-of-fields on any given distances. 24mm/f3.5 is cheap. 24mm/f2.8 is ok. 24mm/f2.0 is good. 24mm/f1.4 is fast 100mm/f1.8 is fast 100mm/f6.3 is a joke & made for beginners. We are only? talking about speed of the lenses. Not caring if they are metal or plastic lenses. Speed of the lens = big money That IS is useless if your subject moves or shooting in low light without flash.

E-M5 hands down: 16MP sensor, Far better ISO, weather sealed, integrated EVF. As for the kit lens it is actually pretty good to start with. You can always get the excellent M.Zuiko 45mm f/1.8 which is pretty? cheap a little later, meanwhile I would step up the ISO (I shoot raw and don't actually care about noise in my photos)

The kit lens for E-M5 is 12-50mm at f3.5/6.3 (the equivalent 35mm is 24-100mm - APS-C also use their own focal length, which is 1.6x the 35mm) 3. In this you're actually trolling. This camera was made for beginners while the Olympus OM-1 was made & built for the pros. Notice that this new camera has the world slowest lens kit at F6.3. A 100mm/f6.3 is very slow & cheap to make.? Olympus, why don't you put the true focal length on your lenses, since your lenses are only 50% good?

In all honesty, this is an? absolute CRAP review. Kai is consistently negative about the camera the entire walkabout, yet mentions several very good points at the end as of in passing... From someone who bought an e-Pl 1 based at least least somewhat on digital rev's review, I find this review to be completely disingenuous... This camera is everything that I've wanted the Pen line to encompass.

So I really want a mirrorless camera and am stuck between the EP-3 and the E-M5. I would either get an EP-3 with a better, wider aperture lens or a E-M5 with the kit lens due? to the big price difference. Especially considering you can get the ep-3 refurbished. ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Or pronounce his book title correctly! Still, Kai's point is well taken. The false homage to the OM is at best nostalgic sentimentality, at worst crass commercialism. That's why though? I love the Zuiko 12mm and 45mm, I just can't bring myself to buy the E-M5. Maybe pair these two superior lenses with a silver E-P3.

I have played with one and WANT one - its been a long time since that has happened. I know the World is blasting off with the new Canon 5D Mk3 and the Nikon D800 ( I use both Canon & Nikon) but this new Olympus makes real sense and its lovely to use - a real camera fans camera. I repeat - handled one - want one. Olympus are bang back on form and their using the same ideas to sell this as they did the early OM range (OM1/ OM2) - David Bailey back on the box? next????

I have to agree - this is a stunning new camera - played with one at the recent Focus Show (NEC Birmingham England) - I loved it. In fact I felt it was the BEST camera in the show and that includes the Canon 5 Mk3 (and I'm a Canon fan boy) and the Fuji X Pro (lovely camera stupid? down market name) - it just shows me and perhaps you how lazy Canon & Nikon have become - and no I don't own any Olympus cameras (yet) - just Canon & Nikon. So how P***ED off am I ? Ps - lovely OM1MD in black - cool.

Huh? That's the reason OM-D and the lenses are so freaking small. Full frame is definitely not needed for every type use. I've got the 5D mkII with several lenses, and EPL-2 with 20mm/1.7 and soon the Zuiko 45/1.8. These primes are ridiculously small compared to fe. EF 35/1.4L and 85mm/1.8 weighting just about 100 grams each. Perfect for travelling and walks on the street. The 5-axis IBIS will be cool. Its easier to get sharper picture with these on low? light.

This is fully weather sealed in a magnesium alloy body. It contains technologies bigger? bodies don't even have such as the 5 axis IBIS and SSWF. No one has tested the EM-5 with a 4/3 lens so we can't say it sucks and since this new camera is dual processor it will be at least as fast as the EP3 which was acceptable for anything aside from sports or high speed movement. The camera has an accessory port and while not traditional it can be used for lots of things.

You are? correct & right it works on E510 and well as our & students' E-5 camera for tethered set-up & shooting with Olympus Studio 2. But for over $1,500 with a very slow 100mm/f6.3 is a major downfall. As The camera has no PC or 3.5mm Sync Flash Socket. Has no USB 3.0? Using this body with the 4/3 lenses {90-250/2.8 (180-500/2.8) the AF sucks. Olympus Studio 2 (version 2.3) can do tethered with Window 7 64 bits. Olympus Master can not do tethered. No tether driver for the OM-D.

I have not had an issue shooting and transferring raw files with my Pen thus I can't imagine that the OMD would be any different. True you can't adjust modes and settings from the computer but if you're holding the camera the settings are fast to change. For how I shoot I only transfer small jpegs 1280x to the computer for my client and they are happy with those as proofs. After the shoot? is over I consolidate and sync my Lightroom library for the shoot.

Any Olympus that use the Eye Fi card can shoot wirelessly to your computer. You can then set up Lightroom to autoimport your photos and you're tethered wirelessly. The other, faster option is to shoot RAW + JPEG to the Eye Fi card and set the card? to transfer only Jpegs to your computer keeping the raws on the SD card. I do this so my clients can see and make selections quickly durring the shoot and I dump cards after the shoot syncing the folders up.

The IS is useless when you have a very slow lenses at 100mm/F6.3. Lens that are F5.6 or greater are cheap to make & great for fooling many beginner photographers. The OM-D is a? 50% (1/2) reduction camera not a 100% (1/1) camera like the OM. Maybe Hasselblad will come a 500CM-D with a reduction size of a APS-C or 4/3 sensor. Not too many photographers will be happy with that.

Olympus I.B.I.S. allows for 2 to 3 stops slower shutter speed. So you can shoot at ISO? 400 with Olympus. Without IS for evey lens you would need higher ISO like 2 to 3 stops = 1600 and 3200 compared to the Oly ISO400. Get it? Also no camea really has good detail at higher ISO's except possinly the Nikon D3.

If you really need to use these unreliable PC sync cables you can do? it through the hot shoe. The finder is called EVF, not fake Pentraprism. 120HZ with 1.44MP resolution. I'm pretty sure this OM-D will allow me to take better photos than the OM-1 or OM-4Ti I've used. They lacked the 5-axis IBIS, and the lenses were not so great wide open.

A 40mm/1.7 (20/1.7) & 90mm/1.8 (45/1.8), like 50mm/1.7 or 1.8, are cheap to make. 4/3 has to come out with 17.5mm/F1.4 to equal 35mm/F1.4. You are correct the EF35/1.4L is not light, just like my ATG Leica 50mm/F0.95 IS (modified) for EOS. I don't think you would like using those lenses, 40 (20) and 90 (45), when you are shooting sports. And in Africa safari - photos of elephants, lions, tigers :o( Most micro 4/3 lenses are very slow. This? kit lenses is the world's slowest first.

I don't get your points about PC Sync and tethering. Clearly this is not camera designed for tethered usage but portability in mind. What's the point? And today nobody really wants to use the crappy unreliable PC sync coords for flashes anymore. Instead a radio transmitter is a much preferred choice that will sit on the hot shoe. Come on. I'm not saying this OM-D would replace my? full frame system for pro use. Rather it will complement it nicely.

Really? Why in earth do you think a pro would be limited to that zoom lens in low light situations? There's a vere nice selection of fast and sharp primes for MFT that blow out the entry level choices for bigger systems in quality and their "pro" series lenses in portability. Fe. Lumix 20/1.7 and Zuiko 45/1.8 are very sharp wide open and weight only 100 grams! Size difference between my EF 35/1.4L and Lumix 20/1.7? is ridiculous. MFT is great for street and journeys.

The pros will turn it down flat once they know the lens is Olympus' world's first slowest lenses 24-100mm/f6.3, no PC Sync and CAN NOT do tethered. As we all knew at F6.3 of higher the image has greater DOP than a lens? at F2.8 or faster. And that IS is useless if your subject is moving. We tested using 4/3 (90-250mm/f2.8) lens with adapter on OM-D - focusing was slow like a snail. Olympus staff didn't like that when we've done the test in front of them & Olympus' lovers.

Future is mirrorless. The less mechanical elements,? the less likely it is that mechanical elements will malfunction. A mirror also shakes your camera affecting the sharpness of your images. I used to own a d200 and many other cameras. Now it's a 5d and a Rolleiflex F3.5. The mirrorless, over 50 years old Rolleiflex is best of them all.

I have the same problem with new gear. In the Czech Republic almost no store will let you try stuff out and if they do, it's probably broken. Try checking for presentations and chances to try it out. When something new is supposed to come out, there should be a store that will let you touch and try it out. I've just don't that with the Nikon D4 and D800. A guy? from Nikon came and told us everything we needed to know and then he let us try it out with about 5 lenses. :)

Huh? Olympus pioneered? in-body image stabilization? And here I thought Minolta did with the 7D, two and a half years before the E-510. Even Pentax beat Olympus by a year and a half - but I digress. Same ole story about no room for the flash, I heard the same thing about the first digital Pen so I had to wait for the E-PL1, which is *smaller* than the E-P1, to get a built-in flash. I love Olympus but please, cut back on the B.S.

Love it! It should be known that it? is a full frame camera..a ful 4/3rds frame camera and a very capable one at that. I just shot a celebrity for a magazine cover with the Pen Mini. Fast, simple and excellent quality. The subject was at complete ease with a small camera, the client loved the results and overall the shoot was fun. The EM5 will easily work well for certain professionals like myself who want a full featured yet small camera. Looking forward to getting my hands on one in Miami ASAP.

Thanks for nothing, really I want the last nine minutes of my life back. Watching your review has made me promise to never buy anything from Park Camera. This is like watching someone give a? review of a Bugatti Body without talking about the engine. P.S. FEATURE LISTING AND NAME DROPPING IS NOT A REVIEW, and perhaps instead of spending 1200 pounds on the OM-D you should of bought an EP3 that is cheaper and doesn't have an EVF. Perhaps, you could have spent that extra money on more toys.

It's a very nice thing indeed. Design harks back to the classic OM 1 and OM 2, right down to the lack of a hotshoe... I assume you have to buy an accessory in order to use a speedlight or wireless flash trigger. I'd love this camera, but I do? a lot of studio work, so a hotshoe or PC sync socket is essential.
