Dr. Presson demonstrates this futuristic device from the '70s. EDIT: a lot of people have written in asking what exactly my vocoder setup is. Well that's your classic Roland SVC-350, and I'm using a Kurzweil K2600 with the basic jar-of-wasps analog brass sound as the driver. The vocal mic has no pre-processing whatsoever, I just plugged it directly into the vocoder.

V2000's have been in that price range, but I've never seen a V1000 nor? V3000 in that range. The V3000 rates up with the Bode, Moog, and Sennheiser. The two best are the V5000 and the Synton Syntovox 221.

A ring-modulator is what the Daleks use, and sounds the least harmonic. A talk-box has a "twangy" sound to it. Auto-Tune sounds like you're? underwater (it makes a "bubbly" sound). A vocoder is the one that sounds most like a speaking or singing robot or computer. It is the COOLEST of the voice-modifiers!!! That's how you can tell the difference among them.

Here's the difference: Auto-tune: A digital algorithm which takes a single-note signal (usually vocals) and corrects its frequency by moving it to the nearest allowed frequency (typically one in a 7-note scale). i don't really like t-pain, but i know that he can sing, and doesn't use autotune for pitch correction. he was one of, if not the first of his genre to use autotune for nothing but a cool effect... it fits the music, and in some cases, it sounds cool. Daft punk uses auto tune for some songs (mostly talk box and vocoder) but they can still sing, or at least carry? a tune, and when they use it, it does add a cool effect to their music.

I'm pretty damn sure he's using Autotune to correct the pitch of his voice, thus the warbling. If it was a vocoder he'd be playing a synth as he sings the notes and it would sound more like Daft Punk for instance or another artist that uses the vocoder to achieve a robotic effect. Autotune is correcting his singing/talking, so he'd have to have some? talent to sing or attempt to sing the high notes, but yes the engineer could program what notes his output would 'snap' to.

I do believe your trolling but out of the sake of boredom...Auto tune corrects the pitch of your voice to the nearest note in the scale selected, using your voice as the only input. Vocoder has 2 inputs one is the voice and the other in this instance is a synthisizer. The synthesizer determines the pitch and the voice determines the frequency for the pitch that is let through. So he is talking with a sythesizer. he is using his engineers talent. not? his own

Only problem with the vocoder is that it only offers limited intelligibility...of course, you can increase the vocoder bands, but that costs you the "edgy" sound...it sounds more wet, and more resonance is created...a clever way to replicate this sound (and still be able to pass by? as a "vocoder" effect) is to use a comb filter, slight bitcrusher, and pitch shifter.

For the price, this is probably one of the nicest and most common Vocoders in audio history. I use to own the VP-330 and LOVED it too, the ensemble switch when toggled? on the 330 is phenominal and very warm, deep, and has a nice chorus. The most expensive Vocoders in the top 4 are EMS, Sennheiser, Moog/Bode and Syntovox. The Sennheiser VSM-201 is highly overrated though and can't see why ppl love this machine? Its ONLY good if your a collector. Th Korg VC-10 and Electroharmonix Vocoders suck

YEah, it's pretty silly how expensive the VP-330 has become. As far as a vocoder goes, the SVC-350 has more sound sculpting ability. I've got the VP's strings covered with my RS-505, but the VP's choir is super sweet. My Korg Lambda's choir is OK, but has nothing on the VP's choir. The SVC is a definate winner? and great value at its current $1K price. Thanks for watching and be sure to subscribe.

kid beepmap is just a vsti. You can get many vsti's like beepmap in every daw that supports adding vst's and vsti's. Like I said before fl studios is good for beginners and something to learn on. Once you have mastered fl it's best to move on.? Other daws may be more complex but in the end you will see results in your music. Also you will take a different approach to making songs. fl is easy.

Fl studio is fun. It's fun as hell. It also allows very much more creativity from the musician. Hell, draw a picture of your mom, put it into the beepmap, instant sound madness. What other daw can you make music solely by drawing pictures? Fl studio has it's flaws,? but definitely the most creative daw out there.

Fl the gayest...i really don't think so. It's good for beginning and learning how to operate basic daws...but you can do a lot with fl...I use ableton right now just got rid of my fl but I'm gonna try something else. VSTs have their place and so do Anolog both have pros and cons. I wouldn't say either are shit. VSTs are cheaper and can be controlled by midi controllers which can be completely customized. Analogs: you don't have to worry? about programming or having a laptop.

Not really. The name is because it started as? a program which you can make loops really simple in the step-sequenzer, thats why its named fruity loops, becuase you can easily and very quick produce loops, by drag n dropping your samples in the step-sequenzer. and i think the step-seq is very powerful, wish ableton would have something like that. but btw, i dont use FL that much...but i think its well powerful, not in all ways, but the pattern-characteristic and the step-seq are.a

I think, Reason is gayer ;-) no Vst's can be loaded, thats crap. But what against drag n drop? Ableton Live is built on drag n drop, and its definitly not for fools who have no skills. Btw, is pretty powerful, many? electronic productions are produced on FL.

Well nice tutorial. But as a Reason user? i find it a little bit off. The routing needed is really at the back. Where the user has to input the source mic, and then route to a mall or what ever, patches are somewhat useless. Manual routing for the vocoder is the best. You wont get a muffled sound. All in all i think its a great tut, and those newbies at Rec or Reas hang in there. Best Programs ever. Once again nice work.

ive gotten the vocoder to work but the output with the phrasing of my voice comes out to slowly(not like seconds slow but surely out of time) ... im using the fl studio rewired playback as my carrier (it plays just fine and in time without the vocoder) is this the problem??.....or could it be beacause im using the mic from my headphones and those are the ones lagging?? as? i also note the bars dont go up just as i speak, they also lag... or maybe something i didnt set up right within ableton??

It feels like a plastic toy, the vocoder is garbage, the whole thing? looks silly as hell and every patch on board makes me want to cry, but with DWGS, 2 timbres and a really deep effects section you can make this thing sound like the m'fin apocalypse bearing down on you. Next to the Blofeld it's one of the dirtiest, meanest bits of kit in its price range for sheer massiveness. I'd buy it again as a rackmount or even a plugin.

I have a question. I'm a guitar player with a couple of guitar amps and a vocal microphone. Aside from the MicroKorg unit itself, what else am I going to need to start "vocoding" at home and at loud, live gigs? I'm just trying to gauge what I'd need to buy. I considered getting a guitar talk box but those need to be plugged into a PA, something my band doesn't always have. Ideally, I'd like to keep it simple? as possible. Thanks!

Yes - you just turn to amp and turn down the vocoder and turn up your voice using pots 1 and 2. This removes the vocoder revealing just your own voice. You can add reverb/echo and flange and a whole bunch of other stuff if you want to fatten your voice if you want.? You don't need to press any keys to hear your voice if you do this.

Is there a way/option to use the vocoder so that you can just talk normally like a DJ speaking before? a song, within the song? Think of that song, Jonah-Listen, like that. Instead of these Daft Punk sounding sounds. Thanks

Midi cable between both keyboards ('IN' on the MK and 'OUT' on the Casio). No you can't save a song. The MK has no sequencing capabilities thus you cannot save any note data directly onto the MK. It's midi though; you could hook it? up to a PC or dedicated sequencer easily.
